Your first visit

What happens at a first visit

A first visit takes about 75 minutes. Most of it is talking and getting comfortable. The treatment itself is short, and you are in charge of the pace.

  • A short form, then a talk

  • A look at your tongue and your pulse

  • A treatment, with time to rest

  • A plan for the next few weeks

A private treatment room with a padded table, a woven stool, eucalyptus and a wood slat wall.

In order

Your first visit, step by step

  1. 01

Step 1: You arrive and fill in a short form

Your name, your contact details and the medicines you take. It is on paper at the desk, or on our own forms page before you come.

  2. 02

Step 2: We talk about your training week

How often you train, what is coming up, how you sleep and how you feel. Your acupuncturist asks about your medicines and your health history.

  3. 03

    Step 3: A look and a check

Your acupuncturist looks at your tongue, feels your pulse at the wrist and checks the areas you mention.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Treatment

Thin, single-use needles go in at a handful of points. You rest, under a blanket, for a while. Your acupuncturist checks on you.

  5. 05

Step 5: Time to come back slowly

Your acupuncturist takes the needles out and you sit up when you are ready. We tell you what to expect afterward and who to call if something feels off.

  6. 06

Step 6: A plan for the next few weeks

We agree on when to come back, what to do around an event, and how to reach us. You pay at the desk, by card.

Getting ready

What to wear, eat and bring

  • Wear

Shorts and a loose top, or sleeves that roll up. Bring what you train in if you are coming straight from a workout.

  • Eat

Have a light meal an hour or two before. Do not come on an empty stomach.

  • Bring

A list of the medicines and supplements you take, and your insurance card if you plan to use it.

  • Allow

About 75 minutes for a first visit, and about 45 for follow-ups.

Before the needles

Tell us first

Tell us at the start of your visit, or when you book, if any of these apply to you:

  • You are or might be pregnant
  • You take blood thinners, or have a bleeding disorder
  • You have a pacemaker or another implanted device
  • You have had lymph nodes removed
  • Needles make you nervous

You can stop at any time

Say so, and the session stops. You never have to try something you would rather skip.
